Pineapple (Ananas comosus), known in Portugal as ananas, is a tropical fruit by the plant of the same name, featured as a monocotyledonous plant of the family of bromeliads in the subfamily Bromelioideae. It is viewed as a symbol of climatic and subtropical regions. The cultivated pineapple trees belong to the common pineapple species, which comprises many fruit varieties. There are also several wild species, belonging to the same genus. The fruit, when ripe, has a very acidic and often sweet flavor.

Rich in vitamin C and manganese, pineapple has antioxidant properties, improving the metabolic process and it is useful against oxidative stress.
